About Cheryl

I was born in the Seattle area and spent my childhood exploring the Olympic Peninsula with my family.  When it came time to raise my own family, I knew I wanted a smaller community with a strong public school district.  The amazing quality of life in Olympia made my decision to move here easy.   Once in Olympia, I was impressed by the passion long-time locals exhibited for their community.  I worked at the City of Olympia Parks and Recreation Department for two years and met hundreds of young parents with many diverse backgrounds.

I volunteered in the Olympia School District as an Art Partner, PTA President, Levy Campaign volunteer and eventually co-chaired the successful 2003 Bond Campaign.  It was the positive experience of working on that campaign that made me love the process of working with a wide variety of viewpoints to achieve a common goal.   In 2003 I took a position with the City of Olympia again directing the Safe and Sober Driving Program and the Thurston County Safe Kids Coalition.  Both positions emphasized community safety and injury prevention.

I learned to work with a wide variety of personalities and lifestyle issues.  What I took away from my years working in public safety was that every person has a story and is worthy of grace and redemption.

In 2006 I made the leap into the private sector by opening a retail clothing store.  Vivala was an amazing experience and I was able to grow into two locations over 12 years. I learned to act as a catalyst for small business and loved encouraging financial independence for all women.  I've carried on that energy by becoming a business coach through the Washington Center for Women in Business located in the offices of the SBA in Lacey.

I'd always planned, one day, to devote time and energy to enhancing the wonderful appeal our town holds for visitors while upholding the balance of livability for our residents.

My time on council, and now as your Mayor, has been the most meaningful of my life. I hope to bring my unique mix of public, non-profit and private worlds into my next term and with your support, make Olympia a model for other state capitals in America.
